Keep the Buffalo Wild
The Seven Principles
In order to keep our river clean and safe, please be sure to follow the 7 principles, lined out by Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. These keep national parks clean and limit our impact outdoors.
The Seven Principles
Plan Ahead and Prepare
Research regulations, expected weather, and potential hazards beforehand. Repackage food into reusable containers to minimize trash, and use maps to avoid making trail markers.
Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
Stick to existing trails and durable campsites (e.g., rock, gravel, dry grass, snow) to prevent trail widening. Avoid cutting switchbacks.
Dispose of Waste Properly
"Pack it in, pack it out". Human waste should be buried in a cat hole 6 to 8 inches deep and at least 200 feet away from water sources. Carry out all toilet paper.
Leave What You Find
Preserve the past by leaving historical artifacts, rocks, and plants exactly as you found them. Do not dig trenches or build unapproved structures.
Minimize Campfire Impacts
Use established fire rings and keep fires small, using only dead and downed wood that you can break by hand. Consider using a lightweight backpacking stove instead.
Respect Wildlife
Observe animals from a distance. Never feed them, and keep your food properly secured and stored away to avoid attracting them to camp.
Be Considerate of Other Visitors
Yield to uphill hikers, control your pets, keep noise levels to a minimum, and camp away from trails and other groups.
